All the UAE’s emirates, except for Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah, are part of the federal judicial system. Following the example of other Arab countries in the region, the UAE’s federal courts have two main divisions: civil and criminal, which follow three stages of litigation, including the courts of First Instance, Appeal and Cassation. All emirates also have Shariah courts (known as Islamic law) that specialize in matters of personal status including marriage, divorce, inheritance and, in some cases, criminal, labour and commercial matters. While there is an increasing number of judges who are UAE nationals serving in Federal courts, there are still Arab judges of different nationalities appointed in higher courts. Law firms from the UK, U.S. and Europe are permitted to practice legal consultancy but are not allowed to plead cases in courts across the UAE.Â
