The literacy rate in the UAE stands at 91 percent. The country has placed more emphasis on education during the past few years in an effort to establish a knowledge-based economy. At present, the federal government allocates 25 percept of its budget to education.Education in public schools and universities in the country is free for citizens. A new model of public schools has emerged in the past five years, encouraging creative thinking and moving away from traditional passive memorisation techniques.For expatriates, the UAE offers a large choice of private schools and universities with different curriculums. Well-known universities include the American University of Dubai, American University of Sharjah, Sharjah University, the Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and New York University Abu Dhabi.
