Frank Muller, Panerai and Breitling: Our watches of the month in July

Introducing the Franck Muller Yachting Collection
Mechanical watchmakers have long had an affinity with the sea. Inspired by Frank Muller’s own Vanguard collection, these yacht-inspired timepieces are available in titanium, gold or steel, with complications varying from the classic chronographs to awe-inducing ‘gravity tourbillon’.

The Panerai Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon GMT
Panerai is known for its military watches, with its two lines made exclusively for the armed forces: Radiomir and Luminor.

But over the past few years, it has been steadily adding functionality to both, with new complications, a flashier design ethos and more wrist-friendly sizes. While the original Panerai watches were purely functional, its latest are increasingly design and complication lead.

For an example, look no further than this Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon GMT. The timepiece boasts dual time zones, a tourbillon, a decimal repeater, and several functions never before seen on a Panerai.

The most unusual aspect of this watch is the chiming system, which sounds the hours, 10-minutes and minutes past the hour. The Radiomir can chime the time in two time-zones. How does it work? Panerai is keeping the secret behind its innovative minute-repeater a secret. For now.

The latest from Breitling and Bentley’s fruitful partnership is the midnight-black, carbon-fibre B05 Unitime
No one drives a Bentley for practicality, and the same holds true for Breitling’s latest B05 Unitime Chronograph. Powered by the same in-house calibre as the manufacture’s COSC-certified Transocean models, the watch case is deliberately oversized (it dwarfs a normal Breitling chronograph movement).

The main selling point is the ‘worldtimer’ complication, which indicates the local time as well as that in 23-other time zones. The timepiece was previously only available in stainless steel or 18-carat rose gold. However the new version features a sleek, black ADLC-coated case. It is apparent that Bentley’s design team had a say in the aesthetics.

The bezel is decorated with the same pattern that adorns the grilles of classic Bentley cars while the back of the watch is home to a steel replica of a wheel. The back also features the automaker’s trademark ‘B’ logo.
